Chris Hughes is a poet, writer and author of ‘I’m not too bad, thanks!’ his debut collection.
He also enjoys writing personalised poetry for special occasions which he sells through his Etsy store. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his family. When he has 5 minutes spare at the end of the day he likes to watch movies or play video games.
What does poetry mean to you?
As a generally shy person, I’ve always found it easier to express myself through writing. When I write poetry it is an expression of my inner self. A little window into my mind, so to speak. Throughout my life, even through difficult times, poetry is something I have turned to. It is almost therapeutic for me.
What inspires your poetry?
Life. I know that’s a very vague answer. To elaborate further, I feel that my poems tell a story. In ‘I’m not too bad, thanks’ I focus on life experiences, my deepest thoughts, love, death and everything in between.
The experiences are real, the thoughts are unfiltered. This is 100% me.
My mum is also a big inspiration to me. She used to write poems – not for publication, not for the world to see, but for her friends and family. She wrote them simply for their enjoyment and I found that to be such a kind gesture. She passed away suddenly three years ago and I want to honour her memory and make her proud of me.
Which are most important to you: (1) joy, (2) peace, (3) patience, (4) kindness, (5) self-control, (6) faithfulness, (7) gentleness, (8) love, or (9) goodness? If you can, explain why.
They kind of all go hand in hand…If I had to say one I guess it would be love. Not to sound cheesy, but it truly does conquer all. It is unconditional. It will get you through anything.
What sort of things are you looking forward to improving this year?
I am looking forward to improving my general well being. Looking after myself physically and mentally and being more in control of things.
This will shine through in my writing. I want to write more poetry and start working on some short stories too. I have 4 children so I’ll have to find the time somewhere!
What is one big dream you have?
Generic poet answer - I dream of getting my poetry published! I want to be successful and be able to support my family.
Little Hands
Pure innocence, no corruption
Please stay that way
Ascend with no disruption
Brighten every day
Those eyes, that smile
Those little hands
I thought for quite a while
Of all your unmade plans
I love you so much
You are all I've got
My legacy as such
Please don't love me not
